Isn't it fair to ask our partner not to scoff at us?

Speaker:Welcome back.
Speaker:This is Jules.
Speaker:This is Vicki.
Speaker:And this is Rebecca.
Speaker:And here's our first question in season six.
Speaker:I just listened to the Psychological Boundary episode.
Speaker:And I can understand that we should work to not personalize and take our
Speaker:partner's or whoever's reactions about us.
Speaker:But also, isn't it fair to ask our partners not to scoff at us?
Speaker:Like, ostensibly, if we're choosing this partner to entangle our lives with
Speaker:and love us and love them and witness us and witness them, isn't it fair to
Speaker:say this reaction doesn't feel loving?
Speaker:Well, of
Speaker:course, am I allowed to jump in and say, yes, yes.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Oh, you know what I find?
Speaker:And I run into this all the time in, in my office.
Speaker:And as I've been talking to people, the books out, I went to a book launch.
Speaker:This was one of the questions that came up actually.
Speaker:Wow.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:So like, this is a question I keep running into common.
Speaker:It's wait a second.
Speaker:Wait a second.
Speaker:Are you saying my psychological boundary should just make me okay
Speaker:with like whatever's happening?
Speaker:Absolutely not.
Speaker:I want to be really, really clear about that.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Well, but what are
Speaker:you thinking?
Speaker:But it's like your psychological boundary helps you figure out
Speaker:what you're not okay with.
Speaker:For sure.
Speaker:And that, I think that's actually like really important.
Speaker:I think it's a important step that maybe in the nuance of the
Speaker:conversation, I don't want to skip over.
Speaker:Like, um, it's before I really started practicing this work, I didn't
Speaker:really know what I wasn't okay with.
Speaker:Mm hmm.
Speaker:And I would tolerate behaviors that really didn't feel okay and really weren't okay
Speaker:because I have these parts in me that are very geared towards pleasing and
Speaker:appeasing and taking care of other people.
Speaker:Accommodating.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:And, and so, so I'm going to tolerate things from that part of
Speaker:me that I shouldn't be tolerating and I shouldn't be, I shouldn't,
Speaker:I should be speaking up around.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:But I wasn't.
Speaker:And my psychological boundary work has helped me to recognize, oh, you know what?
Speaker:That's not about me and it's not okay.
Speaker:Mm
Speaker:hmm.
Speaker:And.
Speaker:Mm hmm.
Speaker:It's not okay.
Speaker:And, and the, and this piece feels so important to me to name too, as
Speaker:we're with the more nuance of it.
Speaker:The psychological boundary is there to help you have a
Speaker:relationally cleaner conversation about the thing you don't like.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Because the hope here.
Speaker:That's a great way to phrase it.
Speaker:Well, the hope here is to separate out.
Speaker:feeling and thought from behavior.
Speaker:So let's say
Speaker:we can keep it about this, the behavior versus what he was thinking.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Well, I was thinking the other day I did this with my, with my little one.
Speaker:She rolled her eyes at me, right?
Speaker:That's the, so the rolling the eyes, not just my house.
Speaker:It's not just your house.
Speaker:So the rolling the eyes is the behavior.
Speaker:And that part feels disrespectful to me, that falls under my, my
Speaker:category of disrespect that's in my not okay world, right?
Speaker:And, and the thought and feeling that we're underneath that eye roll, that's
Speaker:the part I don't want to mess with.
Speaker:In a, I'm not saying I'm not going to influence it.
Speaker:Maybe you will, maybe you won't.
Speaker:But in a, I need to get you to think and feel different so that
Speaker:you don't roll your eye at me.
Speaker:That's the piece that I'm calling, um, psychologically invasive.
Speaker:Mm hmm.
Speaker:It's a little, it's a little bit like, I need you to stop.
Speaker:I need you to stop having the world in this way.
Speaker:I need you to stop thinking the way you think.
Speaker:And feeling the way you feel.
Speaker:That's the part I want to separate out.
Speaker:The psychological boundary work is so that you separate those two so that
Speaker:when I'm with my daughter, I can say, Hey, and by the way, I'm not even
Speaker:going to set a boundary right now.
Speaker:I'm about to do a direct request because direct request is all about
Speaker:asking the other person not to do the thing or to do this thing that
Speaker:you would like them to do, right?
Speaker:So sweetie, could you not roll your eyes?
Speaker:That lands in a hurt way on mommy's heart.
Speaker:Oh.
Speaker:Why?
Speaker:And then she started asking me, why?
Speaker:That's such a great question, babe.
Speaker:Let's talk about that.
Speaker:And then we got into this whole conversation about what are
Speaker:you feeling when you did that?
Speaker:What were you thinking when you did that?
Speaker:What were you hoping when you rolled your eyes at me?
Speaker:What did you really want when you rolled your eyes at me?
Speaker:So we had this whole conversation about how to have a cleaner communication and
Speaker:a communication I could take in better.
Speaker:And
Speaker:it's clean on my end
Speaker:because I'm not trying to get her to not feel the thing.
Speaker:And I'm not trying to get her Not think the thing.
Speaker:What I'm doing is greeting the thing that preceded the eye roll.
Speaker:But I'm addressing the eye roll separately.
Speaker:So we address the scoff, we address the eye roll, we address the
Speaker:language, we address the volume of the voice through first direct
Speaker:request, maybe more than once.
Speaker:And if, if, if nothing is changing and it is not okay, then I would do boundary.
Speaker:This thing that you're doing is okay.
Speaker:This thing that you're doing is not okay.
Speaker:When that things happens, here's what I'm going to do.
Speaker:And that's about adding protection, not punishment.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:It's about adding protection, not punishment.
Speaker:I'm not trying to punish my daughter for the eye roll.
Speaker:If she won't stop.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:But I want to laugh.
Speaker:Go ahead.
Speaker:Finish.
Speaker:I might choose to, like, pause a conversation with her in that moment.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:And then, and then the question is, oh, can You For some people, I get
Speaker:this a lot too, is, well, does that mean I should leave the relationship?
Speaker:Well, I don't know.
Speaker:Is this like a deal breaker level problem?
Speaker:And that's not a question
Speaker:for me.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:That's, that's a question for you.
Speaker:Only you can decide that.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I have to laugh and I just, I wanna own, this was a little bit ago, but,
Speaker:um, and this is me doing Uturn U-turn.
Speaker:Oh no, I actually do in my not great moments.
Speaker:Want to change the way Gabe is experiencing the world.
Speaker:So yeah.
Speaker:Oh, yeah, totally.
Speaker:And there's no, I'll go ahead and say there, I don't think I'm alone
Speaker:in that, but, so it's not only I want to change the behavior, I do, I, I
Speaker:actually I don't as much want to change my children's experience in the world,
Speaker:but oh, I absolutely I'll just own it.
Speaker:Yes, I do.
Speaker:Oh, no.
Speaker:Something about not changing the experience of the world.
Speaker:And I burst out laughing.
Speaker:So I was like, Oh no, I really didn't want to change games.
Speaker:I
Speaker:really don't.
Speaker:Here's the thing is this is, I love that you're naming this.
Speaker:Because that's exactly what my point.
Speaker:I think we do want to, and I think it's psychologically invasive when we try to.
Speaker:I agree with that as
Speaker:well.
Speaker:I wish it wasn't.
Speaker:I need a psychological boundary
Speaker:because I can be emotionally
Speaker:manipulative.
Speaker:And I want it to be okay.
Speaker:I do want to change it.
Speaker:I just believe in my own integrity.
Speaker:That's actually not an.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Thing to let myself do.
Speaker:Well, so I'm creating this psychological boundary to give myself more space
Speaker:to really move more into how I want
Speaker:to see the world, but that it's actually not just a psychological boundary, right?
Speaker:This is where we go.
Speaker:Like we're like, put, this is ninja stuff.
Speaker:We're putting things together because we're now putting together direct
Speaker:requests with psychological boundaries and with containing boundaries, right?
Speaker:The pause.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:Well, I'm using the psychological boundary inside of my pause, right,
Speaker:to help me greet the person I'm with.
Speaker:Right,
Speaker:but before you move from the things you're thinking and feeling to the things you're
Speaker:saying and doing, right, the behavior and, and the words that you're speaking.
Speaker:Before you move to that, we need a little pause with a little
Speaker:containing boundary, like, right?
Speaker:So, so
Speaker:like, I'm weaving them together like this.
Speaker:It's like, right.
Speaker:And here's this thing that emerges, which is like a new way of doing relationships.
Speaker:By the way, massive plug.
Speaker:I've had people coming in and talking to me in my office about the book.
Speaker:And some of the stuff that they're talking to me about, because we've been
Speaker:doing a lot of this work already, right?
Speaker:It's not like so new for some of my people, but one of the things they're
Speaker:really talking to me about is that knowing their why is so freaking important
Speaker:because it keeps them on task and it helps them remember, Oh, that's why I'm
Speaker:practicing my psychological boundary.
Speaker:That's why I'd be practicing the containment.
Speaker:That's why I'd be making a direct request, right?
Speaker:Like it's, it's helping them to integrate all of this into one cohesive practice.
Speaker:That
Speaker:is so
Speaker:awesome to hear that I want to add to that.
Speaker:Um, just about me again, I'm a little selfish today, but I love it because
Speaker:my why with my son Michael and I, this might be the first time I've
Speaker:actually like named him an example, but it's not any, it's not, it's.
Speaker:My, why with him is helping me stick to limits that I've given him.
Speaker:Um, like if I say that I'm going to do this by the count of five, I
Speaker:better do it by the count of five.
Speaker:Or if I say you need to shut off the computer, then I have to stick to
Speaker:whatever consequences coming after.
Speaker:Um, And I've been really loose with that his entire life.
Speaker:And so when I figured out my why, that's what gives me the strength of
Speaker:like, in this moment is important for me to be raising a man with integrity
Speaker:and I have to model for him that you do what you say you're going to do.
Speaker:But I had to actually think about that one night, like I was rehab
Speaker:and it was like, what's my why?
Speaker:And I was like, I was describing it to myself and I went, Oh, I
Speaker:want to raise a man with integrity.
Speaker:That's a pretty big why.
Speaker:It's a
Speaker:pretty big why.
Speaker:It's a pretty big why.
Speaker:It's a, it's a big enough why it will give you the emotional oomph
Speaker:you need to do the hard thing.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Great.
Speaker:So, Oh, his discomfort is very hard for me.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Similar to like, why is it hard when we disappoint, like Gabe,
Speaker:Gabe's scoff the last recording, but Michael's disappointment, Ooh,
Speaker:it's hard for me to upset him.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Oh yeah.
Speaker:Totally.
Speaker:Limits upset him.
Speaker:So, but it's that big why is.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:imperative.
Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:it is.
Speaker:It is.
Speaker:It's really helpful.
Speaker:So when I'm thinking about this question and like, is it okay, is it okay?
Speaker:Isn't it fair to ask what I'm noticing, uh, caller who's writing in, uh, calling
Speaker:in with this, um, what I'm, what I'm thinking is you want to separate out.
Speaker:the feeling and thought part.
Speaker:So the idea behind the psychological boundary, and I think I say
Speaker:this, can I tell you all how hard it is to write a book?
Speaker:One of the things I find really, really difficult about
Speaker:writing a book is two things.
Speaker:One is that in general, in these experiences, I Um, actually have
Speaker:long, ongoing conversations with people and we're kind of co creating
Speaker:and understanding these ideas in a nuanced way in conversation
Speaker:and I can't do that in writing.
Speaker:But the other piece that's really, really difficult that's coming
Speaker:up right now is whoo, I'm already saying it better, but I wrote it.
Speaker:18 months ago.
Speaker:Dang it.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Here's, here's, here's my new take on it.
Speaker:Are you ready?
Speaker:This is just the hard piece.
Speaker:Realization to hear it.
Speaker:That's fascinating.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:It's like, Oh
Speaker:man, it's transforming and I already wrote it down.
Speaker:Dang it.
Speaker:I've, um, but that's part of it.
Speaker:This is just, this is part of the evolution of thought, right?
Speaker:This was one of the things that was really challenging for me about
Speaker:putting it on paper is that I knew, I knew when I was putting on paper.
Speaker:Yeah, and later I'll say it different and evolve my thinking on this.
Speaker:So here's, as I'm trying to help people wrap their heads around
Speaker:this, here's what I'm thinking.
Speaker:I'm trying to help us feel a little safer, a little more protected as
Speaker:we face this truth about minds.
Speaker:You happen to be born in a species that's an interconnected one.
Speaker:So longing for relationships is just something you're wired for and you
Speaker:don't get to do much about that.
Speaker:Sorry.
Speaker:That's a great way to phrase it, we're just wired
Speaker:that way.
Speaker:We're just wired that way.
Speaker:It is what it is.
Speaker:And two.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Everybody's mind is different than yours.
Speaker:Nobody actually agrees with you perfectly.
Speaker:Everybody sees the world differently than you.
Speaker:We're all beings, whether we like it or not, we're all
Speaker:beings with different minds.
Speaker:So you're going to see the world differently than the
Speaker:person standing next to you.
Speaker:And I don't care if it was your identical twin.
Speaker:That's still going to be true.
Speaker:It doesn't matter.
Speaker:It doesn't matter because
Speaker:you have all these different nuances in your DNA and in your own history and what
Speaker:you took in from that event that they didn't take in from that event and how
Speaker:you see this thing is just different.
Speaker:You don't see reality the same.
Speaker:That's the truth of it.
Speaker:So if I need to be connected to somebody super different than me, how can I
Speaker:feel a little bit more okay with that?
Speaker:That's what the psychological boundary is for,
Speaker:is that I don't have to change you.
Speaker:I don't have to make you more like me
Speaker:in order
Speaker:to be.
Speaker:I don't need to make you more like me to be okay.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:That's what the psychological boundary is for.
Speaker:Executed boundaries and direct requests are more to handle behavior issues.
Speaker:And containing boundary is more to handle.
Speaker:You, you could, you could lose a pause between what you feel
Speaker:and what you do pretty easy.
Speaker:And if you add one, it sure will help you stay in your integrity.
Speaker:So, so that's more like an integrity move.
Speaker:And then the physical boundary is more about like physical safety in
Speaker:the here and now and knowing more about what your body wants in this
Speaker:world.
Speaker:I like to think that the containing boundary, the, the integrity
Speaker:move, it's, it's about creating a pause within myself long enough.
Speaker:That I can figure out what I'm going to do next that feels okay enough.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:Because it's not actually about the pause, it's about what happens next.
Speaker:The pause just gives you space to make a decision with a little bit more integrated
Speaker:brain space because you're going to use compassion as part of your pause.
Speaker:And so because the love part is there, it's going to help your brain go, Oh,
Speaker:things are a little bit more okay and move back into a little bit more integration.
Speaker:Because we've
Speaker:introduced two specific keywords that are unique to each of us.
Speaker:We also have kind of like a compass.
Speaker:A little reminder.
Speaker:Mm hmm.
Speaker:Totally.
Speaker:To help us remember, like, you know, this is how I really
Speaker:want to show up in the world.
Speaker:And so that helps with, with kind of coming back home to ourselves
Speaker:in those tough moments and figuring out, oh, you know what?
Speaker:It wouldn't feel so good for me to keep doing this this way or for me to make
Speaker:this, uh, ask of someone that would.
Speaker:Ask them to change how they're thinking or feeling.
Speaker:What would feel better and be more in my integrity would be for me to maybe
Speaker:make a direct request or for me to tell them, you know, that didn't feel so good.
Speaker:Here's what I'm going to do.
Speaker:Here's how I'm going to take care of myself in a way that would feel better.
Speaker:Um, but I'm able to do more of that because of the pause.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:I actually asked for more change.
Speaker:Mm hmm.
Speaker:Because of this work.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Not less.
Speaker:Mm hmm.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And something I'm thinking, too, that caught my attention in this question
Speaker:was this idea of, isn't it fair?
Speaker:And I just want to slow us down for a second because I think we have these.
Speaker:questions about like, is it okay for me to ask for what I want?
Speaker:Is it okay for me to ask for what I need?
Speaker:Am I justified in it kind of, and this speaks to me of a larger, harder thing.
Speaker:That's like wider than even this question of like, are we worthy of
Speaker:fighting for and asking for stuff?
Speaker:And.
Speaker:and saying what doesn't feel good and like, I watch, I watch all of us.
Speaker:Kind of operate from the space of, well, it has to feel justified enough, rather
Speaker:than just knowing you're a worthwhile being.
Speaker:I want to like, stick my tongue out at all of that.
Speaker:Like, I want to scoff at that belief, you know?
Speaker:Like, not at any of us, but at the belief
Speaker:that Oh no, at the societal issue.
Speaker:Yeah, that there's somehow like, there's not enough inherent worth in any of us.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:That, that, that any of us would have to prove our humanity or, or our worthiness.
Speaker:And I think that systems being what they are.
Speaker:Whether we're talking family systems or school systems or other kinds of
Speaker:institutional systems, wherever we're talking, we're set up in a way where
Speaker:we're taught to abandon ourselves.
Speaker:We're taught to move away from ourselves in service of something that is not us.
Speaker:And so part of this work is the return to the self, is the return to
Speaker:I have worth just for being who I am.
Speaker:And I get to speak for that because if I don't, who's gonna?
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Totally.
Speaker:And who knows you and what you need better than you?
Speaker:And, and
Speaker:for many of us, it's not our
Speaker:parents.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:For some of us it was too.
Speaker:And so I find myself thinking, if not me, then who?
Speaker:And some people actually can answer that, but I'm, let's
Speaker:pretend for me it was my mom.
Speaker:And I just don't
Speaker:know.
Speaker:Can I, can I slow us down for a minute?
Speaker:Not to just interrupt you there, Vic, but I think for folks who, who
Speaker:had really well attuned to parents.
Speaker:I think those people come into relationships with a better sense of self.
Speaker:They come into relationships speaking for themselves differently
Speaker:because they, that was valued.
Speaker:Well, yes.
Speaker:I don't want to minimize that.
Speaker:And I'm thinking the other, there's a downside when, if you're, when you're
Speaker:young, who's going to speak up for me if your parents are, but like.
Speaker:Doing it in such a way that you still don't have your own voice.
Speaker:I don't want my mom speaking up for me now that I'm 50.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Let's pretend she was still alive.
Speaker:Like, eventually I do have to own that somehow.
Speaker:So even if when we were young people were doing it, but if they were
Speaker:doing it in, I don't know, some weird way or wrong way, whatever,
Speaker:I don't Like those words, but, or
Speaker:even exquisite attunement sometimes can be hard because it can give me a space
Speaker:where I don't have to learn how to Mm-Hmm.
Speaker:exquisitely attune myself.
Speaker:I think that's what I'm thinking.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:'cause my parent was so exquisitely attuned to me.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And spoke for me with all the things.
Speaker:And so I never really had to learn to use my voice.
Speaker:Um, that can be challenging in a different,
Speaker:that's what I'm leaning towards.
Speaker:Like we still need to learn how to do it for ourselves And, Mm-Hmm.
Speaker:um.
Speaker:And understanding this is what you both are talking about with the inherent
Speaker:worth that yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm allowed to ask for anything in the relationship.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Totally.
Speaker:It's allowed even the point.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Like I get, I get these questions about fairness or am I allowed to, or is it
Speaker:justified that I, or, um, Is it okay to ask for relational accountability and, and
Speaker:Oh, you know, yeah, yeah, of course it is.
Speaker:And I'm, I'm calling this out not because of you caller, but because Mm-Hmm.
Speaker:I'm, I'm, I'm naming this larger problem where we assume we have to earn love
Speaker:and we assume we have to earn worth.
Speaker:rather than operating from a space of deep value that is equal to others.
Speaker:And so that's the piece.
Speaker:That I think all this work of boundaries is about living into
Speaker:equal worth.
Speaker:Well, I think it can also be scary because I'm realizing if I know that
Speaker:I'm allowed to and it's fair and it's justified and I can, I'm allowed to tell,
Speaker:joking here, but in response to the call, I'm going to make it me, I'm allowed
Speaker:to ask Gabe to stop scoffing at me.
Speaker:And then if he says no to that direct request, I have
Speaker:to deal with that reality as
Speaker:well.
Speaker:And it may be even that you set a boundary.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:It may be that you go through grief and you're not setting
Speaker:a boundary and that's fine.
Speaker:And it may be that you set a boundary with it like, okay, I hear you.
Speaker:You cannot control or don't want to try stopping that you're stopping me.
Speaker:When you do, I want you to know I'm going to have to end that conversation.
Speaker:It's just too painful for me.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And then I'd go ahead and follow through with that and end the conversation.
Speaker:And then he starts, you know, chasing me down the hallway a little bit
Speaker:and being, what is the big deal?
Speaker:I don't.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Don't.
Speaker:Now my psychological boundaries up.
Speaker:Hmm.
Speaker:I'm not going to change his mind about this.
Speaker:I know, sweetie, that you don't understand why this is painful for
Speaker:me, whether you can take it in or not.
Speaker:It is.
Speaker:I'm just going to take care of me.
Speaker:I'll be back in 10 minutes.
Speaker:But notice your tone too.
Speaker:And that's because I wasn't urgently
Speaker:trying to change it.
Speaker:Yes, exactly.
Speaker:Like you don't get a tacky.
